Totally Tuesdays Featuring Oh Abby Day

Welcome everyone!

Today I have the lovely Vicki from Oh Abby Day, she is a Mom, Blogger and amazing handcrafted jewelry artist.

Give her a warm welcome and go ahead and drool over her beautiful wares.

So tell us, how did Oh Abby Day get started?

I’ve always made jewelry.  Just recently, my husband and I decided that it was time for me to stay home and be with our two little children.  It just made sense to start selling jewelry as well.

Do you have words of wisdom for other Etsy Sellers?

If you have a craft business, I would highly recommend  selling your product at local craft fairs, farmers market and festivals.  That is such a great way for you to connect with your community and introduce your product to your neighbors.  We live in a society that supports local artists!

What is your favorite social media outlet? Why?

My favorite social media outlet is my business/personal blog.  I blog over at Oh Abby Day, a blog about motherhood and handmade.  There, I can be creative and write about anything that my heart desires.  I also take photographs so I can place my photos on my blog as well.

How do you keep organized with two young children and a handmade business?

I ask myself that quite often. I’m a busy mom on-the-go so I’m very much a visual person. I just purchased a calendar which I post up in the kitchen (where I spend most of my time).  There, I can write down all the things I need to do such as appointments, meetings, purchases and deadlines.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Currently, I use gold filled and gemstones in most of my jewelry pieces. Five years from now, I would also like to incorporate a line consisting of all recycled materials and repurposed jewelry.  Any parent would agree that as you mature and become a role model to your children, you start to ponder about the world around you.

Do you ever get burnt out? What’s your favorite way of re-grouping?

Oh yes, you can get burnt out easily.  One Saturday, I found myself on the internet for 6 hours straight!  Time literally flies when you are on the internet networking.  To solve this problem, I use a timer.  Once I hear the ding - I’m off the computer. My favorite way of regrouping is shutting down all electronic devices and reading a good book.

Any funny/embarrassing stories you want to share that came as a result of running your business?

Funny you mentioned, one of my customers purchased a calcedony necklace during an art walk.  I said cal-ced-o-ny and she pronounced it chal-ced-o-ny.  She was adamant.  It just became silly. Go figure?  Tomato, tomahto. Moral of the story; be nice and let the customer win.

Any good resources that you like to read up on for growing your business?

I found Bev on Linkcouture.com.  She too has a business on etsy and gives really good advice and tips on bettering your craft business.  She also talks about her experience at shows and so much more.  I felt a connection with her because she is passionate about her art as well as inspiring others to do what they love to do.

What was the BEST feedback you ever received on a product?

One lady said she had purchased five pieces from me and cant wait to see my new pieces!  In this business, you’re alone all the time-crafting away.  So to hear something like that means a lot.

  5. Great. That means I can teach you something now that you have taught me various things today :)

If you go and check out my boards you will see that many of them are group boards (meaning that I am not the only pinner). All you need to do is let me know what boards are of interest to you and I can add you. Many of our advertisers and columnists pin with us :)

LOL – Pinterest is very easy to get addicted to.
